Here are some examples of historic or creative bindings.  Click on each photo to see a larger image.

Chain Binding:  Typical Medieval binding.  Sewn “double-flexible” on cords, laced through quarter-sawn oak boards.  Covered full in burgundy Chieftain Goatskin.  Chain and clasps of brass.

Quarter-bound leather:  Typical Renaissance structure, similar to the Chain Binding.  Sewn “flexible” on cords, laced through quarter-sawn oak boards.  Spine covered in dark green Chieftain Goatskin.

Vellum Account book:  Typical 15th century limp-vellum binding.  Longstitch sewing through a leather spine stiffener.  Secondary sewing through the exposed longstitch structure for added protection and as decoration.

Book of Hours model:  Small full leather binding, sewn “flexible” on cords, laced through bookboard.  Covered full in red Chieftain Goatskin.

Half-bound case:  19th century case-bound book.  Text block.  Cloth on spine and corners with hand-marbled paper.  Cover mounted to text block using adhesive.

Tree of Heaven:  Contemporary case-bound book.  Text block sewn on linen tabs.  Covered in handmade flax paper for structure, over which was applied bark of the Ailanthus.  Title information blind-stamped using hot brass tools into seed pods from the tree.  Cover mounted to text block using adhesive.

The Gospel According to Jesus:  Full leather contemporary case binding, shown here as tooling is being done.  Collaborative work with calligrapher Cheryl Jacobsen of Iowa City.  Sewn on linen tabs, cover mounted to text block using adhesive.  Covered full in burgundy Chieftain Goatskin, blind tooled using a hot brass folder.
